Vehicle insurance (also known as auto insurance, car insurance, or motor insurance) is insurance purchased for cars, trucks, and other vehicles. Its primary use is to provide protection against losses incurred as a result of traffic accidents and against liability that could be incurred in an accident.

Public policy

In many jurisdictions it is compulsory to have vehicle insurance before using or keeping a motor vehicle on public roads. Most jurisdictions relate insurance to both the car and the driver, however the degree of each varies greatly.

A 1994 study by Jeremy Jackson and Roger Blackman showed, consistent with the risk homeostasis theory, that increased accident costs caused large and significant reductions in accident frequencies.

Can you resume your auto insurance policy one it was canceled?
Q. Can you resume your auto insurance policy one it was canceled? ok it was canceled 5 months ago I wasn't using the car so I didn't need insurance at a moment. Now I am planning on using the car again. Can I just call them and ask them to send me a monthly fee and get insurance resumed or do I need to go to insurance place and talk to Insurance sales agent and pay $200 finders fee again? I don't want to pay those fees again. Is there a way to resume my insurance without those extra fees. I am a California resident.

A. You will have to start a new policy with a new application. You should call around and get another agent. The $200 finders fee is excessive. Our agency used to charge a fee of $20 for new assigned risk policies ONLY because of the large amount of paperwork, low commission and high cancellation rate. We would never charge that on any other policy. Pick up the phone book & call other agents. Call someone that has a list of companies they represent under their name. When you call ask if they charge a finders fee. If they do, call someone else. I was under the impression that "finders" fees are limited. Call the CA Dept of Insurance to find out if they are limited in CA. You won't be able to avoid a new application but you certainly… [cont.]

Why are auto insurance companies allowed to get away with such criminal practices?
Q. After moving into inner Atlanta because I've grown tired of a completely car dependent lifestyle, my auto insurance went from 70 dollars a month to nearly 160 based solely on my location. Not only is this unfair and stupid, it seems to me to defy logic. I would think the suburban commuter who is spending lots of time in his car every day is more prone to claims than me, who barely has a reason to use my car anymore. Ridiculous. Clarification: We're talking state minimum coverage here, so I wasn't covered for theft in the first place.

A. Take a close look at your policy to see which coverages went up. I'll bet there was a big jump in comprehensive coverage, which covers theft. Also, metropolitan areas are almost always higher than suburban areas because of more congestion which causes more accidents. Insurance companies don't just randomly pick rates for certain areas, they have to back it up with their claims data when filing their rates with the state insurance department. If you really feel this is criminal then file a complaint with your state insurance department. if they feel the increase is not justified they will investigate and if your company is really doing something wrong it will get rectified.

What is the penalty for giving invalid auto insurance information at the scene of an accident?
Q. In the state of Washington what happens when invalid auto insurance is given at the scene of a minor traffic accident?

A. The other party if they do not obtain current insurance information from you has the right to take you to civil court, and will most likely be awarded a much higher amount of money then they would have if you had just given them up-to-date insurance information.
